What is the Process for Getting Dentures Like?

Getting fitted for dentures requires several appointments and will take place over several weeks. The process begins with a consultation and dental examination, during which your dentist will determine the overall health of your teeth and jawbone to determine if dentures are the best option for you. If you decide to go this route, the next step will be to take dental impressions of your remaining teeth and gums. This impression will be used to mold an appliance that is specially designed to your mouth and needs. If any teeth need to be extracted prior to making and placing the dentures, your dentist will schedule this procedure.

Once your dentures are ready to be placed, you may have a couple appointments to make minor modifications to the shape, fit, and color. The process will be complete once you are satisfied with the look and feel of your new dentures.

It is important to be aware that there will be an adjustment period, during which you may experience mild soreness, difficulty chewing or speaking, and an increase in your saliva flow. These will subside over time as you become accustomed to your new dentures.

Cost of Full & Partial Dentures

The final cost of your procedure will be determined by a variety of factors, such as the severity of your case and what type of dental plan you are currently enrolled in. Our office does accept cash, most major credit cards, money orders, and personal checks.

If you have concerns about the extent of care required and would like to discuss alternate financial arrangements, please feel free to contact our office to discuss CareCredit. CareCredit helps patients pay for procedures and treatments that are not covered by insurance by offering low minimum monthly payments and No Interest* financing so you can get what you want, when you want it. Applying for Care Credit only takes three simple steps and can provide instant approval.

If you have any additional questions regarding payments, dental insurance coverage, or available financial options, please contact our office and we will be happy to help

Full vs. Partial Dentures

Full dentures are used for patients who are missing all of their teeth. These type of dentures fall under two categories: conventional and immediate. Conventional dentures are made following the removal of teeth and after the patient’s gums have healed. Immediate dentures are provided to patients as soon as the teeth are removed. After the patient’s gums have healed fully, your dentist will make adjustments to ensure they fit properly.

How to Best Care for Your Dentures

Even though they are not your real teeth, it is still important to take good care of your dentures. To ensure the best results and avoid developing any additional oral issues, follow these best practices.

  • Rinse dentures after eating. Running water over your dentures will remove loose particles or food debris. It is a good idea to place a towel next to your sink to rest the dentures on to prevent them from becoming damaged. While cleaning your dentures, be careful not to bend the clasps or plastic.
  • Clean your mouth after removing your dentures. It is important to continue practicing good oral hygiene habits, such as brushing your remaining teeth as well as the roof of your mouth, cheeks, and tongue.
  • Brush dentures daily. Be sure to clean your dentures with a brush at least once a day.
  • Soak dentures overnight.  Most dentures require moisture to retain their proper shape.
  • Rinse dentures before putting back in mouth. This is an especially important step to follow if you use a denture-soaking solution, as swallowing these chemicals can be harmful to your health.
  • Schedule regular dental checkups. It is best practice to visit your dentist twice a year, but this is especially important for patients with dentures. These visits will give you and your dentist an opportunity to evaluate the fit of your dentures and make any necessary adjustment to improve their effectiveness and comfort.
